1. Who we are: The RCEC is a group of Reinhardt students who share a love of horses! Some of us are at different levels of riding and have different goals, but we all enjoy learning about our equine friends and having a great time together! As of right now, we are not affiliated with the IHSA so there’s no pressure to show unless you truly want to.
5. Lesson Schedule: “old” members Don’t forget to sign up for a lesson time! Choose a time that you know you can make every week, and remember that you need to be at the barn at least 30 mins. before your lesson to tack up! New members: we will sign up for lessons once your evals are complete!
6. Car Pooling: Would you be interested in sharing a ride with a club member who needs one? Let Christy know and she’ll try to sign you up for lesson times to accommodate your needs.
7. Funding: In the past, SGA has generously reimbursed club members for lessons! We should be able to continue with this! However, if you want to horse show, that will need to come out of your pocket. Committee: Would you be willing to be a part of the RCEC committee? You will hold separate meetings from our monthly meeting to plan events. See Virginia or Megan if you’re interested!
8. “Spirit Wear”: We have RCEC t-shirts and jackets! See Virginia to place your order! If you ordered a jacket last year and were unable to pick it up, please see Christy after the meeting.
9. Horse Shows: If you’re interested in showing locally, please see Christy. If there’s enough interest, we might try and get a clinician or 2 to come to the farm this year.
10. Riding Clothes: There are several tack stores, but none are what you might call close to the College. Christy will send an email out, she’s getting in touch with some businesses to see if they’re willing to give a group discount. J $$

At Tartan Farm we specialize in Hunter/Jumpers with a Dressage foundation. By following these principles, a well-schooled horse and effective rider are developed. This is accomplished by focusing on the learning style of the rider, consistency and patience while training the horse, good preventative care, cross-training… and by having FUN!
Our Owners/Trainers
Christy Abernathy has lived and breathed horses since she was a young child, but like some young riders, had to earn the privilege through hard work and perseverance. From learning to ride bareback on her cousin’s farm in Ohio, to competing in IHSA Nationals, to passing on this love of horses to all of her students, she truly has a passion for the sport. She is also a certified teacher in grades 7-12, which helps establish a good rapport with her students and their equine counterparts.
Roy Abernathy grew up among Tennessee Walking Horses in the foothills of North Carolina. His experience is both hands-on and by education. He rode and trained Tennessee Walkers from an early age. While at North Carolina State, he was on the horse judging team and received three degrees in animal science/vet med, environmental design and architecture. Currently, Roy is an architect specializing in the design and management of equine and companion animal facilities including Vet Schools, Equine Sports Medicine and Large Animal Tertiary Care Hospitals.
In creating Tartan Farm, Christy and Roy have taken a sustainable approach to farm management and are focused on equine management based on sustainable and holistic practices. Through proper preventative care and management of both the animals and the environment we provide a healthier and enriching learning, but also physical environment.
